Who do we blame for AA/BEE?

Back in 1977 there was a black man by the name of Rev. Leon Sullivan, he was a board member of GM Motors, at the time the biggest employer of black people in South Africa. Of course he was not a South African black but was an American black. Judging by the quote below he seems to think he was the saviour of blacks in South Africa.

"Starting with the work place, I tightened the screws step by step and raised the bar step by step. Eventually I got to the point where I said that companies must practice corporate civil disobedience against the laws and I threatened South Africa and said in two years Mandela must be freed, apartheid must end, and blacks must vote or else I'll bring every American company I can out of South Africa"

Bear in mind this was in 1977 so he didn't quite achieve his objective, we can safely say these principles were quite a failure considering it wasn't until the 1990's when things began to change. So without further ado...

  1. Non-segregation of the races in all eating, comfort, and work facilities. Equal and fair employment practices for all employees.

  2. Equal pay for all employees doing equal or comparable work for the same period of time.

  3. Initiation of and development of training programs that will prepare, in substantial numbers, blacks and other nonwhites for supervisory, administrative, clerical, and technical jobs.

  4. Increasing the number of blacks and other nonwhites in management and supervisory positions.

  5. Improving the quality of life for blacks and other nonwhites outside the work environment in such areas as housing, transportation, school, recreation, and health facilities.

  6. Working to eliminate laws and customs that impede social, economic, and political justice. (added in 1984)

Needless to say since they were a failure of course the U.N. decided in 1999 to not abandon them, but to embelish on them and create a new set of principles for the global stage. If you want top know more, go read up on them. Suffice to say the father of AA/BEE has the blood and welfare of thousands of white South Africans on his hands.
